The formation of new narrative pasts in Make. Believe., like in Possession Is Nine Tenths, does more than fill the gaps of black ancestral pasts. It exceeds those realities by inserting black subjects within spatial temporalities that register at the level of truth but are also historical impossibilities. In this respect, both pasts—that of Banks’s own family and that in the original photo—are made anew. Banks’s work reimagines the historical photographic object as a projective space in which to swell the voids of unknowable pasts and, in doing so, produce sites of contact, knowledge, and affect that transcend the boundaries of space, time, and circumstance. Banks’s transmogrified photographs remap the coordinates of possible black pasts by rerouting the Middle Passage journey across a spectrum of alternative narratives that enable historical points of intimacy and plausibility.
